Jeremy Swayman pays heartfelt tribute to Johnny Gaudreau and brother Matthew at $66M contract signing
Jeremy Swayman signed an eight-year contract worth $66 million with the Boston Bruins on Sunday. The deal averages $8.25 million per year and runs through the 2031-32 season. Swayman was excited and said (per NHL.com),
“I couldn’t be happier."
During the press conference, Swayman also addressed the tragic deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. They died in an accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, on August 29. Swayman had a connection to Gaudreau, as they shared the same agent, Lewis Gross.
"Before we do get going, I would like to have one thing to say," Swayman told reporters on Monday. "I had a lot of ties indirectly with Johnny Gaudreau. I think this is a great platform for me and my family and obviously this organization to send our condolences to that family and Johnny and Matthew."
He further expressed support for Gaudreau's family.
"So, I hope that his family feels the support endlessly from my family, obviously me and the entire hockey world. To see the amount of outreach and love he got -- it just goes to show what kind of impact he had on our world and for the game of hockey. So, I just really wanted to get that across. We miss him a lot."
The Bruins also honored Gaudreau with a statement and a moment of silence before their preseason game.
Jeremy Swayman is "excited to be a Boston Bruin"
Jeremy Swayman will be the Bruins' number-one goalie this season after Linus Ullmark's trade to the Ottawa Senators. He has big responsibilities incoming, but for now, he is excited to sign long-term with the team.
“I’m just so excited to be a Boston Bruin,” Swayman said per NHL.com. “The fact that we went through this process and the tools that I learned with it, it’s gone now. All I care about is being a Bruin. The fact that I can do that for eight years and instill myself as a leader and as a true member of this city is all I care about right now."
It will be exciting to see how Jeremy Swayman takes on his new full-time, primarily goalie pressure.
