Johnny Gaudreau was recently honored in a pregame tribute prior to the Flames, Blue-Jackets game
The Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames faced off in their lone matchup at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Dec. 3. The two teams had played each other in Columbus on Nov. 29, where the Gaudreau brothers were honored pregame. This one meant the most as Johnny spent nine of his 11 NHL seasons as a Flame in Calgary, where he and his wife Meredith formed a family and called it their home.
For pregame warmups, the Blue Jackets and Flames wore jerseys with Gaudreau's name on the back and the number 13 in honor of Johnny. Chants of "Johnny" rang out at several points throughout the game as the Calgary faithful showed their love for the Gaudreau family.
Johnny's mother, Jane, and father, Guy Gaudreau, were also in Calgary for the game. Guy took the morning skate with the Flames in a thoughtful gesture by the team.
The Flames went on to win the game 3-0, backstopped by a Dustin Wolf shutout. In a touching moment postgame, the Flames named Johnny Gaudreau the first star of the game. His father, Guy, took the ice as Johnny's name was announced with longtime teammates of Johnny - Rasmus Andersson and Mikael Backlund - by his side.
It's still difficult to process the tragic events of Aug. 29, but the hockey world is doing its part to honor and support the Gaudreau family for as long as necessary.
