Leafs' Nick Robertson doesn't have a lot of leverage' in current RFA stalemate, opines NHL insider Pierre LeBrun

ARJUN B

Nick Robertson remains without a contract as the Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp approaches. The restricted free agent is coming off his entry-level deal after recording 27 points in 56 games last season. However, on June 30, Robertson requested a trade out of Toronto.

On TSN's OverDrive, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun provided an update on Robertson's situation:

"The latest there is that told that he still would prefer a change of address, but that it's been slow going on that file. ... He's training back home and waiting for a resolution, but the process has certainly hasn't moved along as fast, as this camp would like. So we'll see where that goes."

When asked how far Nick Robertson is willing to take this stalemate, LeBrun cautioned that the winger lacks leverage.

"He doesn't have a lot of leverage in this situation," LeBrun said.

LeBrun explained that many RFAs remain unsigned league-wide. He noted that Detroit's Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider are even training together in Germany without new deals. LeBrun said deadlines tend to drive signings, but many negotiations drag out until the last minute.

Regarding a trade, LeBrun is skeptical. He pointed out players often request trades in the offseason then end up re-signing, like Martin Necas did with Carolina. LeBrun reiterated Robertson wants out but conceded:

"when you're in RFA, there's only so much you can do."

In conclusion, LeBrun said that Nick Robertson still hopes to be moved but acknowledged:

"That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen."

NHL fans react to Pierre LeBrun's comments on Nick Robertson

Fans have been buzzing with reactions to Pierre LeBrun's comments about Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Nick Robertson.

Many Leafs fans expressed frustration, with one fan's sentiment echoing a common theme:

"I think a lot of Leaf fans would prefer if he had a change of address as well. Let's get on that."

Another wrote:

"Honest question does LeBrun ever say anything positive when it involves Toronto?"

Here are some more fan reactions:

"If he is such a talent that clearly the Leafs are not convinced of, why hasn’t he been offer sheeted. Clearly the Leafs won’t match. Seems like taking a free player for any other team," one fan wrote on X.
The guy has a great shot. Problem is he doesn’t have a great 200 foot game. That works in beer league hockey but not in the NHL," another fan wrote.
"He’s been given every chance to grow his game and succeed, no more so than he will this year," a user commented.
"Leaf fans can't handle when a player wants to leave the legacy of losing leafs," another user wrote.

As discussions continue, all eyes remain on the Leafs management and their next move.
