"Looking for a younger cheaper replacement?": NHL fans livid as Sportsnet announces Christine Simpson's departure

NHL fans on social media expressed outrage following the announcement of Christine Simpson's departure from Sportsnet. She had served as a veteran hockey reporter, host, and interviewer at the network for nearly three decades.

Simpson, who primarily covered the NHL, shared the news on X/Twitter and expressed her gratitude for her time at the network. She noted that since Sportsnet began broadcasting in 1998, it has been a privilege to cover the NHL and connect with numerous individuals in the sport.

While she feels sadness about concluding her chapter at Sportsnet, Simpson is eager to explore new opportunities in her career. She also thanked her viewers and supporters for their loyalty throughout her journey.

Fans on social media appeared to be unimpressed with Sportsnet's decision to part ways with Christine Simpson as they shared their reactions on X/Twitter. One tweeted:

"Looking for a younger cheaper replacement?😡😡😡"

Another chimed in and offered one hockey personality they would like to see go:

"Dumb move. We love Christine. But if you kicked Ron Maclean to the curb we would love it."

Several other fans shared their disappointment on X:

"Not going to be the same without you there Christine. As a female sports fan, it is so great seeing strong women sportscasters. Let us all know what you're up to next." commented another.
"One of the best the NHL has ever had. Your love for the game has always been evident and the interviews you’ve done with the players over the years proves it. Thank you!" one X user wrote.
"This Christine Simpson superfan is gutted to see this pop up in my feed. There is no way you're on the sidelines for long- period. We need a female voice in hockey, all of us who look up to you and have followed your career since way back, are rooting for you! See you back SOON," another posted.

Meanwhile, one fan pleaded for Christine Simpson to stay on.

"Can we keep her and let her brother go and do Oiler games? Please, he hates the Leafs and we have to suffer through him all year," another X user chimed in.

Christine Simpson worked at HOF in Toronto before her career in reporting

Before starting her career in reporting, Christine Simpson served as the marketing manager at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. She landed her first TV role at Rogers Sportsnet during its launch in 1998 and went on to spend nearly three decades primarily covering the NHL.

In addition to her work at Sportsnet, she also worked as a rinkside reporter for ABC and ESPN. Furthermore, she hosted segments on "Showtime with Chris Simpson," which showcased a mix of entertainment and sports stories.
