Maple Leafs' Easton Cowan discloses his No.1 goal at development camp
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2023 draft pick Easton Cowan was part of the team’s recent development camp. It seems he's more determined than ever to make the roster this year.
While speaking to the media after the development camp, Cowan expressed his ambition and confidence in making the NHL team. He said that his goal has always been to play in the NHL and feels optimistic about his chances.
“I wanna make the team,” he said. “That's always been my goal. I wanna play in the NHL one day, and I'm feeling very confident.
"Just gotta come into camp, be a very reliable player and someone coach can trust. I gotta learn game management a bit better, and I think I'll be good."
When asked what areas of his game he would like to improve on, Easton Cowan mentioned that he needs to do more stops and starts and be more aware of his surroundings:
“More stops and starts. Kinda opening up my body towards the check instead of turning my back. Just having my head on a swivel at all times. Really just getting it in at the blue-line, little plays like that go a long way.”
He also spoke about improving on making small but significant plays, like ensuring the puck crosses the blue line, which can have a big impact on the game.
Easton Cowan opens up on getting ‘stronger’ than last year
On his first day of this year’s development camp, Easton Cowan mentioned that he learned a lot both from last year's camp and throughout the year.
When asked how he has improved since last year, Cowan mentioned that he has become stronger both physically and mentally:
“I think I've just gotten a bit stronger, not only physically but mentally. I've learned a lot on the mental side of the game, and I feel like that's helped me out a lot.”
The 19-year-old shared how he has improved in not letting previous shifts affect him negatively. He admitted that in his draft year, he struggled with that, but now he's better at moving on and playing with confidence each shift, which has greatly benefited him.
The London Kings forward was also asked if he had met Craig Berube, the new Leafs coach. Cowan replied that he hasn't spoken to or met Berube yet, but he has heard that Berube is a great coach, having won a Stanley Cup and is looking forward to meet his future HC.
