Maple Leafs' Nick Robertson makes his feelings known about being scratched

ARJUN B

Nick Robertson made his feelings known after being scratched by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He sat out in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 6–4 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night.

Based on line rushes at practice on Wednesday, it appears that Robertson will sit again when Toronto hosts the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

"I don't know if I was surprised or not, I just go with it," Robertson said about being scratched (as per fortmcmurraytoday.com). "I'm not taking anything personal. It's just part of the deal, and it's my job to work hard."

Robertson only managed a goal in the nine games of Toronto's regular season despite his impressive five goals in preseason.

"It has been fine. I think I've had some good games, some OK games, but puck luck hasn't really been there.
"I'm sure that'll turn around. I'm still confident in my game. I'm not beating myself up about it. I know that I'm getting another opportunity, whenever that is, and it's my job to execute," Robertson added.

Unlike past seasons, Robertson requires waivers to be sent to the AHL's Toronto Marlies. There's virtually no chance the Leafs would risk losing him to another team. Robertson was drafter 53rd overall by Toronto in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Maple Leafs HC Craig Berube on Nick Robertson being scratched

Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube explained that the coaching staff is trying to find the right role for the young player to maximize his talents.

“We had him (Nick Robertson) out there penalty killing (in practice) because I do think that he can be a penalty killer for us with his speed and his tenacity,” Craig Berube said. “It’s something I want to keep working on with him and him to keep building.
“That’s not taking away from his scoring ability or anything like that, but it’s just another part of his game that can grow,” Berube added.

The coach reiterated that Nick Robertson's scratch wasn'y related to his scoring touch but rather an effort to expand the different situations he can be utilized in.
