Max Pacioretty return update: NHL analyst provides major update on Maple Leafs forwards’ availability against Bruins
Max Pacioretty is expected to return to the Maple Leafs’ lineup against the Boston Bruins on Saturday. He missed one game due to a lower-body injury he sustained in Tuesday’s 6-2 loss to Columbus. Barring last-minute changes, he’ll replace Pontus Holmberg, who is likely to sit out as a healthy scratch.
NHL insider Mark Masters tweeted:
"Pontus Holmberg, Conor Timmins staying out late at skate; Appears like they will be scratches tonight in Boston Max Pacioretty poised to return from lower-body injury & Philippe Myers set to make Leafs debut"
Max Pacioretty, 35, has two goals, 12 hits, and seven shots in five games this season. The Maple Leafs hope his return will add scoring depth and experience for the matchup with Boston.
Defenseman Philippe Myers will also make his Maple Leafs debut on Saturday. He has been a healthy scratch for the first eight games but will play alongside Simon Benoit. Myers, who last appeared in the NHL with Tampa Bay, brings seven seasons of experience.
Toronto Maple Leafs lost 5-1 in Max Pacioretty's absence
The Toronto Maple Leafs lost 5-1 to the St. Louis Blues at Scotiabank Arena. Goaltender Jordan Binnington made 40 saves for the Blues. Dylan Holloway scored twice, and Jordan Kyrou and Pavel Buchnevich each had two assists.
Philip Broberg opened the scoring for the Blues early in the first period. He shot the puck past Joseph Woll. Holloway then scored on a power play, extending the lead to 2-0.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored Toronto’s only goal, making it 2-1 in the second period. Alexandre Texier quickly answered for the Blues. Next, Jake Neighbours made it 4-1 early in the third period. Holloway added an empty-net goal to finish the game at 5-1.
Maple Leafs' coach Craig Berube noted their lack of awareness, leading to easy goals for St. Louis.
"We made mistakes, bottom line. Defensive mistakes,” Berube said per NHL.com. "Lack of awareness on some of them. For me, we gave them three goals. Shouldn’t happen."
Binnington praised the new players, like Broberg and Holloway, for their hard work, saying, “They’ve been a big addition."
The Maple Leafs need to improve their performance as they move forward in the season.
