"MSL lost the room": Habs fans irate after Montreal Canadiens' 5-3 loss to Devils

ARJUN B

The Montreal Canadiens suffered a disappointing 5-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night. The defeat dropped the Habs' record to a league-worst 4-8-2 on the season with five straight losses.

Alex Newhook scored twice and Brendan Gallagher added a goal for Montreal. However, it wasn't enough as the Devils got goals from Jesper Bratt (two), Jack Hughes, Ondrej Palat and Jonas Siegenthaler.

Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves for New Jersey while Sam Montembeault stopped 22 shots in the loss.

Montreal Canadiens fans have voiced their frustration after the loss on social media, with most aiming at head coach Martin St. Louis. One fan tweeted,

"MSL lost the room. Time for Hughes to fire him before he embarass himself more."

Another fan wrote,

"It’s going to be a long season boys."

Here are some other fan reactions:

"All you guys blaming Matheson. Should consider the amount of time he gets on the Ice. They need to cut his TOI down by about 8 to 10 min per game and he will be better for it," one fan wrote on X.
"Marty will call out Arber and Struble for every mistake they make but won’t say a thing about Matherson," another said.
"Bulls**t Monty, Hutson, Gallagher, Newhook, Evans battled till the end, the rest gave up.after 1st goal.against," a user commented.
"Nah yall f**king suck a**, MSL is out here tryna teach lessons benching Slaf & Dach yet Suzuki has been pure dogshit & Matheson too," another user wrote.

The Montreal Canadiens will look to bounce back on Saturday when they face rivals Toronto Maple Leafs on the road.

Game Recap: Montreal Canadiens' 5-3 loss to Devils

Jesper Bratt opened the scoring for the Devils just 1:33 into the first period on a tip-in goal assisted by Jack Hughes. Ondrej Palat scored late in the period to give the Devils a 2-0 lead with a wrist shot off a Hughes pass.

In the second period, Alex Newhook got the Canadiens on the board with a snap shot to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Jonas Siegenthaler restored the Devils' two-goal lead minutes later with his first goal of the season.

Brendan Gallagher scored late in the second to bring Montreal within one, making it 3-2. Jack Hughes padded the Devils' lead in the third period with a wrist shot, set up by Bratt.

Newhook scored his second conversion of the game to pull the Montreal Canadiens within one again, but Bratt sealed the 5-3 win for the Devils with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
