NHL rumors: Elliotte Friedman claims Flyers 'still trying to figure out' top goalie prospect's situation

The Philadelphia Flyers reportedly still aren't sure what the situation will be with top goalie prospect Alexei Kolosov. The goaltender has not yet reported to camp and is reportedly not even in the United States right now. It has the team in a precarious spot as the preseason ramps up.

Elliotte Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts podcast:

"Philadelphia is still trying to figure out where things will go with Alexei Kolosov, who did not arrive to camp and remains in Russia. Teams who have inquired were told a second-round pick is the price, but, before anyone is willing to do so, they would have to figure out if Kolosov would join them."

If Kolosov isn't going to play for the Flyers, they are allegedly willing to trade him. They've named a second-round pick as the price, but teams that trade for him would likely find themselves in the same position. If Kolosov doesn't want to play for Philadelphia, he may not want to play for any other NHL team that makes a move for him.

Currently, Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov are the two goalies on the depth chart. The Flyers would like to see Alexei Kolosov there eventually, but it's unclear if or when that will happen this season or at all.

Kolosov reportedly didn't like playing in the AHL and was homesick, which could prove tricky for any NHL team to work around if he ever makes it over to the league. His talent suggests that he could, but other factors may stand in the way.

Flyers' Alexei Kolosov issued warning by Andrei Gavrilov over absence

Retired Russian goalkeeper Andrei Gavrilov, who spent five seasons in the AHL, doesn't believe that Alexei Kolosov gave the Flyers a fair shot. He isn't sure if someone told him that he wouldn't play or what rumors he heard, but he doesn't believe the prospect is doing the right thing.

He said via Philly Hockey Now:

"Maybe he came, and in principle, he did not like North America. For me, he had to try. Moreover, now in Philadelphia, there is no reinforced concrete No. 1.
"If he never comes there, then a second chance may not be given. The rest of the NHL clubs will be afraid to sign him. If the Flyers want to trade him somewhere, then the teams will also not have confidence in such a player.”

Kolosov's NHL future is totally up in the air right now, and Gavrilov doesn't think it's the right thing for the hockey star prospect.
