NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs' Craig Berube guarantees Nick Robertson playing time, per insider

Nick Robertson has expressed a desire to play for another team, but he is a restricted free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs. They can match any offer he receives, so he could end up staying even if he doesn't necessarily want to.

In an effort to smooth things over, the Leafs have reportedly looked into how they can ensure Robertson gets more ice time. This is one of the ways teams can alleviate tension with a player, and the Maple Leafs are apparently considering all avenues.

NHL insider Darren Dreger said:

"I believe that they're going to get something done. Nick Robertson is likely going to return to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
"Robertson has his own personal reasons. Whether it was under the guidance of Sheldon Keefe or maybe he just felt like he wasn't the right fit and he was being miscast, or he wasn't being given opportunity in Toronto."

He reported that the disgruntled player has had conversations with Leafs coach Craig Berube:

"He assured him that look, 'Take a look at this left side. There's nothing but opportunity in this lineup.' I know Berube has assured him that he'll be given a chance... He's leaning more to recognizing what he has in Toronto and making the best out of the situation."

Robertson may not have to pursue other options after all, though this season will determine if he gets the playing time and if he still wants to stay after that.

Potential suitor rumored for Nick Robertson

Nick Robertson has not yet been signed to an offer sheet, one that the Toronto Maple Leafs could match if they want. Based on the latest report, they would like to bring him back and give him more playing time. Since he is technically on the market, other teams could throw a wrench in those plans.

The Hockey Writers' Zach Martin believes one team could try and sign him in the final month of the offseason: the Carolina Hurricanes. They went deep in the playoffs last year but have lost some attacking power and depth, so Robertson would fit. He also wanted a change of scenery, which might make the Canes an enticing option.
