NHL Trade Rumor: Pierre Lebrun speculates more trade in line for NY Rangers after Jacob Trouba and Kappo Kakko
The New York Rangers have had a tumultuous start to the 2024-25 NHL season. After a 12-5-1 start, the Rangers were crushed 6-2 by the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, November 23rd. This led to general manager Chris Drury leaking that core pieces Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider were available for trade, with the team looking to shake things up.
Ever since this attempt to wake up the team, the Rangers have spiraled, going 3-9-0 and falling out of a playoff spot. These struggles have caused speculation about what else could be in the works with the Rangers moving forward. Here is what Pierre LeBrun of TSN had to say on the state of the Rangers on "SC with Jay Onrait" Wednesday night.
"The trade freeze comes Thursday night at midnight, so I don’t know if he’s got another one in him right now. But certainly between now and March 7th, I don’t think he’s done. The Rangers have been the biggest disappointment of the season in the NHL. You could argue Nashville, but unlike them, the Rangers were two wins away from the Stanley Cup Final six months ago. To see their fall from that position to this is unreal," LeBrun said. (2:50 onwards)
Lebrun went on to mention Drury's failed attempt to spark his team.
"Ever since the news leaked of Drury messaging other GMs about Kreider and Trouba being available, the Rangers are 0-3-9. If MSG’s intent with that leak was to shake up and wake up the team, it clearly did not work. It went the other way. The team is in disarray, not on the same page, and it feels like those players don’t enjoy coming to work every day. So no, I don’t think Drury is done," LeBrun added.
The NY Rangers have been making big changes
We've seen former captain Trouba dealt to the Anaheim Ducks several weeks ago, and yesterday, former second-overall pick from the 2019 NHL draft, Kaapo Kakko, was sent to Seattle in a trade with the Kraken.
In these deals, the Rangers have acquired Defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and Defenseman Will Borgen. It will be interesting to see what other changes Drury has up his sleeve.
The NY Rangers will look to turn the ship around when they head to Dallas on Friday night to face the Stars. The puck drops at 8 p.m. EST.
