NHL Trade Rumors: Elliotte Friedman claims Hurricanes are working on long-term extension with $37,100,000 D-man over Jake Guentzel
The Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly focusing their attention on signing defenseman Jaccob Slavin to a long-term contract extension, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. This news comes as a surprise to some, as many expected the Hurricanes to prioritize re-signing forward Jake Guentzel.
Guentzel was acquired from Pittsburgh in March and carries a $6 million cap hit on his current contract as per CapFriendly. Friedman reported on X, saying,
"Hearing the Hurricanes are working on a long-term extension for Jaccob Slavin. He is eligible to re-sign on July 1 and is a huge part of what they do."
Slavin is gearing up for the final year of his seven-year $37.1 million contract and will be eligible to resign from July 1.
In the 2023-24 season, Slavin made an impact with 37 points across 81 games playing over 20 minutes per game on average.
Jake Guentzel discusses potential re-signing with the Carolina Hurricanes
During his exit interview in May, Jake Guentzel shared his thoughts on re-signing his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
"I loved my experience here. It's a great place to play. I don't think you realize behind the scenes how good it is and the guys make it good too. We'll see what happens. I just loved my time here and we're going to see what happens in the next little bit here," Guentzel said.
The winger seemed to relish his first experience being traded, saying:
"It was a new experience, but that's what's fun about it sometimes. You kind of get used to a spot, so it was fun to have a new experience and get to a new place where it's kind of a new challenge. Family loved it and it was a great spot for us."
Jake Guentzel also discussed fitting in well with his new Hurricanes teammates down the stretch.
"It felt good. It's an easy group to be a part of. Just unbelievable guys and they made it pretty easy for me. Obviously, it's not fun being here right now. You wanted to have kept playing, but it was just a good overall experience for me," Jake Guentzel said.
The Hurricanes are set for a busy offseason as they have 13 contracts expiring and around $26.8 million in cap space as reported by Cap Friendly. At the moment, Scott Morrow stands out as the lone defenseman with a contract extending past the 2024-25 season.
In addition to Guentzel, other notable players set to become free agents include Jordan Martinook, Teuvo Teravainen, and Brett Pesce. The team will also need to navigate new deals for key restricted free agents Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas.
