"No NHL team wanted him"- Hockey fans dismiss William Nylander's brother Alex's claim of turning down multiple offers to join Maple Leafs affiliate

Alex Nylander, brother of Toronto Maple Leafs star William Nylander, said he turned down NHL offers to sign with the Toronto Marlies. NHL insider David Alter tweeted the update on X and shared Alex's opinion.

"Alex Nylander said he did receive NHL offers elsewhere but felt signing an AHL deal in Toronto was best for his career," Alter tweeted.

Hockey fans reacted quickly, with some questioning his claim.

"I call bullshit, no NHL wanted him… clearly…" One fan said.
"He’s so me choosing university based on proximity to my older brother" a fan wrote.
"He’s not an NHL calibre player…if his name was Alex White , no one would know who he is, he’d be playing in some senior hockey league in Alaska." another fan wrote.

Here are some more reactions from fans on X:

"And my dad is my agent." one fan said.
"Knies - Nylander - Nylander" a fan predicted an unique line combination.
"The money for an AHL deal probably isn't much different than a two way NHL deal plus free rent." a fan said.

Despite fans' doubts, Nylander hopes this decision helps him make it back to the NHL.

William Nylander's younger brother might have a chance to play NHL level for the Leafs.

The Toronto Marlies signed Alex Nylander to a one-year AHL contract on July 28th. Last season, the 26-year-old played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets. He scored 11 goals and four assists in 28 NHL games and had 17 goals and 15 assists in the AHL.

With this new contract, Alex cannot be called up to the Maple Leafs unless he signs an NHL deal.

The signing benefits both Alex and the Marlies. The team gains an offensive player, while Alex can focus on his development. His AHL contract allows him to play without waivers and still join the Maple Leafs training camp.

Alex's road to the NHL could open up if younger players fail or injuries occur. His chances of playing with William Nylander depend on how he performs in training camp. If he impresses, he could replace underperforming players.
