Owen Power makes his feelings known after being benched for majority of 1st period in Rangers-Sabres clash
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Owen Power made his feelings known after being benched for most of the first period in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers.
Power didn't get another shift after Mika Zibanejad scored a power play goal, giving the Rangers a 1-0 at 7:01 of the first period. Coach Lindy Ruff likely sat him due to a turnover he made that led to Zibanejad's 300th career goal.
However, Power was back on the ice for the Sabres in the second period. After the loss, Owen addressed his benching, acknowledging the mistakes that led to the decision.
"I mean, it’s pretty obvious. I make two horrible plays on that goal and there’s nothing much that really needs to be said. I know that’s on me and those plays are unacceptable. I think it’s just the accountability that we all asked for," Power said.
Nevertheless, Ruff was impressed with how Power responded after being benched. He finished the night with a goal and an assist.
"I know that’s a culture change," Ruff said.
It was a must-win game for both the Rangers and Sabres. However, the Blueshirts managed to secure two points on the road, marking their third victory in the last 11 matchups.
Meanwhile, the Sabres continue to struggle, extending their season-long losing streak to eight consecutive defeats. The club sits seventh in the Atlantic Division with an 11-14-4 record and 26 points after 20 games.
