Philip Broberg injury: Insider makes big claim regarding Blues star's status
NHL insider Andy Strickland offered some insights into St. Louis Blues defenseman Philip Broberg’s condition. Strickland's words came as a relief for Blues fans. He has stated that while an official update is expected soon, the injury is not thought to be season-ending.
"Philip Broberg has been better than advertised for the Blues this season. Suffered an injury in Saturday’s win over Toronto. An update is expected later today, doesn’t appear to be season ending. #stlblues," Strickland posted on X.
In 12 games this season, Broberg has already notched up two goals and nine points. However, an unfortunate collision with Toronto’s Mitch Marner during Saturday’s game barred him from returning to the lineup.
As he skated along the boards, Broberg collided with Marner, and as both players fell, Marner appeared to put extra weight on Broberg’s right leg.
Broberg was visibly in pain and needed assistance to leave the ice. He did not return for the remainder of the game, finishing with 10:17 of ice time before the injury.
If Broberg is ruled out for Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Scott Perunovich is expected to rejoin the lineup. Perunovich’s return could help, but Broberg’s absence would still be significant given his recent form and expanded role on the team.
The 23-year-old has become a key player for the Blues after he was signed through an offer sheet before the season started.
Broberg has stepped into a top-pair role this season, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game in six of his last seven appearances. He has also been promoted to the top power-play unit.
Blues HC Drew Bannister has since announced that Broberg will miss 4-6 weeks through the lower-body injury.
Philip Broberg suffered the injury in the Blues' 4-2 win over Maple Leafs
The St. Louis Blues defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday, breaking a three-game losing streak. Mitch Marner scored first for Toronto in the opening period, picking up a loose puck after a Conor Timmins shot.
The Blues responded in the second period. Colton Parayko tied it 1-1 with a slap shot from the point, with Oskar Sundqvist screening in front.
Jordan Kyrou then gave the Blues a 2-1 lead when his pass bounced in off Toronto’s Jake McCabe’s skate. Parayko scored again later in the period, extending the Blues' lead to 3-1.
In the third, Steven Lorentz brought Toronto closer, scoring on a rebound to make it 3-2. However, Pavel Buchnevich secured the win for the Blues with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Jordan Binnington made 35 saves for St. Louis, helping them control the game in the second period and outlast the Leafs.
