"Probably last crack": Jacob Trouba doesn't mince words about future Rangers' current core

Jacob Trouba, the captain of the New York Rangers, has made it clear that the team's current core is facing a crucial moment.

Following the Blueshirts' first official on-ice training camp session on Thursday, Trouba said that this season might be the last significant opportunity for the group that has developed together over the years.

Jacob Trouba emphasized the importance of their shared experiences and the collective goals they have set for themselves. However, he also acknowledged a well-known reality within the organization that this season might be the last opportunity for this core group to fulfill their championship aspirations

“In all likelihood, this will probably be the last crack for this core,” he said.
“I don’t think that’s a secret by any means. We’re a group that’s grown together, spent some years together here, and we have something we want to accomplish.”

Trouba has two seasons remaining on a seven-year contract worth $56 million, which averages $8 million per season. Notably, the 30-year-old transitioned a no-movement clause into a 15-team trade clause in June.

This change gives him some control over potential trade scenarios as he continues his tenure with the team.

Jacob Trouba explains offseason saga

During the offseason, the Rangers were rumored to want to trade Trouba, but the move didn't materialize. He opened up about the trade rumors during the offseason, saying:

"Not a whole lot, a lot of words. Had good communication with the organization throughout. Don’t really have much to comment on.
"There’s a lot of things that were said and snowballed and I don’t know, you’re going to have to figure out where they came from. If you find out, let me know."

Trouba expressed his excitement for being back with the team (via NHL.com).

“I'm excited to be here, happy to be back in the room with this group and this coaching staff,” Trouba said. “I think we have a great opportunity ahead of us this year."

Jacob Trouba was selected ninth overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2012 NHL draft. He played with the Jets for six seasons before joining the Blue Shirts in the 2019-20 season.

Trouba became the New York Rangers' 28th captain for the 2022–23 season. This will be his sixth season with the Blue Shirts.
