"Probably time to hang them up sadly": NHL fans speculate T.J. Oshie's NHL future after Capitals place him on LTIR

The Washington Capitals have announced that alternate captain, T.J. Oshie, is expected to be placed on long-term injured reserve for the 2024-25 season after completing his medical test on Wednesday.

The classification of his status as injured has raised concerns among NHL fans about his future with the team. The decision is a significant blow for the Capitals, as Oshie has been a vital contributor to the team's offense and leadership.

His absence could impact the team's performance in the upcoming season, prompting speculations about his future with the team. Here's what NHL fans said on X/Twitter regarding T.J. Oshie's latest injury news.

One speculated:

"Damn, probably time to hang them up sadly."

Another chimed in:

"Damn. Not unexpected but this one stings. Osh is the heartbeat if the caps - hopefully he will still be around the team this season."

Here are some of the other top reactions on X:

"Sad. One of my all time favorites. Time remains undefeated," one X user wrote.
"If he's not retiring, that means there's a chance he returns at some point?" one wondered.
"We love TJ. A DC champion forever. But it’s over. This isn’t about the LTIR loophole. The guy is very unfortunately done. And he should be. Too many concussions and now this back thing. He’s a legend. Retire. Go enjoy your family and work in media or as a coach," another commented.
"This time its benefiting my team but im in favor of closing the LTIR loophole." opined another.

T.J. Oshie opens up about his injury

T.J. Oshie reflected on a difficult last season due to a chronic back injury that sidelined him for an extended period.

The 37-year-old acknowledged the challenges not only for himself but also for his family and teammates, emphasizing the impacts of his condition on the team dynamics. Speaking to the media, he said (via NHL.com):

"The last season was challenging for me, my family, and my teammates as I dealt with a chronic back injury that kept me out of the lineup. I have used the offseason to explore and pursue long-term solutions for my injury. I remain committed to the process and am working and doing my best to regain total health.
"In the meantime, I will continue to help and support my teammates and the organization in any way I can. I greatly appreciate all of our fans' support during this time.”

T.J. Oshie has been with the Caps for the last nine seasons after joining them from the St. Louis Blues in the 2015-15 season. He has notched up 385 points through 192 goals and 193 assists for the club.
