Ryan Whitney makes his opinion of Jeremy Swayman's delayed $66M Bruins extension very clear
Ryan Whitney, a former NHL player and host of the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast, shared his thoughts on Jeremy Swayman’s contract. After NHL insider Elliotte Friedman posted on X about Swayman's eight-year $66 million deal with the Boston Bruins, Whitney responded.
"I think a win for player and team. Which is why it makes no sense this couldn’t have been done sooner," Whitney posted.
Swayman’s contract is worth an average of $8.25 million per year and will run through the 2031-32 season. The goalie was a restricted free agent. He previously signed a one-year contract worth $3.475 million after an arbitrator's decision in August 2023.
During Wednesday's press conference, Bruins president Cam Neely said that he believed Swayman wanted to remain in Boston.
"I strongly believe that Jeremy wants to play here," Neely said per NHL.com."I've asked him flat-out, do you want to play here, and he does."
Neely also shared what the Bruins proposed to Swayman.,
"I know that I have 64 million reasons why I'd be playing right now."
The difference of $2 million is not something that should've prevented the Bruins from extending Swayman's contract per Whitney. The delay resulted in Swayman missing the essential preseason practice games which could've given the Bruins an idea of the right fit and adjusted their goaltending backups.
Last season, Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark helped Boston win the William M. Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals. Ullmark was traded to the Ottawa Senators which allowed Swayman to become the team's No. 1 goalie.
Jeremy Swayman shared a video message amid news of not starting in Season opener
In a video posted by the Bruins on Saturday, Jeremy Swayman thanked the fans for their support. He shared what he felt about being back with the team.
"Hey fans, 'Sway' here. I'm so excited to be back," Swayman said. "I cannot thank you for all of your support throughout this entire process but we got a lot of new beginnings to start and I cannot wait to get going."
He is eager for the start of the new season and the opportunities ahead despite the delay.
Jeremy Swayman will not start in the Boston Bruins' season opener against the Florida Panthers. Coach Jim Montgomery named Joonas Korpisalo as the starting goalie per The Athletic's Fluto Shinzawa. He will be taking his time to cover the practice hours needed before starting.
