Sam Rosen reveals the 'selfish' reason he wants New York Rangers to make deep playoff run
Sam Rosen, the primary play-by-play sportscaster for the New York Rangers, has a dream that his team will make a run all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. While this is standard fare for fans and those connected to a team, Rosen has what he calls a 'selfish' reason:
"Selfishly, I'm hoping the Rangers have this tremendous run in the playoffs this year and get to the Stanley Cup Final because TNT has the Final this year, Kenny [Albert] would be doing the game and I'll do the Radio!"
This is Rosen's final season as a radio personality for the Rangers. He has already announced that he will not continue after the 2024-25 season, which gives him just one more shot at calling a Stanley Cup Final with the team.
Sam Rosen discusses impending retirement
The New York Rangers will need a new radio play-by-play announcer next season, as Rosen will retire after the upcoming campaign and start a new chapter in life.
It has been a stellar career, one that is now reaching its twilight, so much so that the Hockey Hall of Fame presented him with the Doster Hewitt Memorial Award in 2016.
"This is what I grew up on," Rosen said. "I grew up in New York. I grew up in Brooklyn. I grew up as a Rangers fan. To do this, for as long as I have, is unbelievable. You don't keep count while you're doing it, but when you reach this point, you can look back and say, 'Hey, this has been a pretty good run.'
"And, of course, 1994 makes it the ultimate because they won the biggest prize of all, and they won it at the Garden, and nothing could be better than that." [H/T NHL.com]
If the Rangers can send Sam Rosen off by allowing him to call the Final with Kenny Albert doing the television cast, he will retire having met his goals.
