"Setting himself up to be suspended" - Former Bruins HC Don Cherry opines on Matt Rempe's off-season training
A viral video on X (formerly Twitter) showed New York Rangers player Matt Rempe practicing uppercuts with Georges Laraque.
Working with Laraque, who has 1,126 penalty minutes, is expected to benefit Rempe's game. This training has led to discussions about the latter's future contributions as a player and a fighter for the Rangers.
Former Boston Bruins coach Don Cherry shared his thoughts on Rempe's off-season training. On The Don Cherry’s Grapevine Podcast, the eponymous host talked about the New York Rangers player.
Cherry disapproved of this and said the NHL promotes spontaneity. Training to fight could lead to severe suspensions if someone gets hurt.
"I don't think it's a good idea. The National Hockey League lets on that everything is spontaneous. You don't train to be a fighter. I don't think the NHL would be too happy. I think Rempe is setting himself up to be really suspended if he hurts somebody," he said.
The video of Rempe training with former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque is now being observed by many.
Rempe, who moved up from the Hartford Wolfpack to the Rangers last season, gained a reputation as an enforcer. He excited the crowd and played a tough game, especially in his first match against the New York Islanders.
Enforcers are less common in the NHL today, but Rempe brought energy to the Rangers and their fans. Now, the 22-year-old is preparing for the 2024-25 season by training in Calgary. He is focusing on playing center and wing positions, improving his defense, and enhancing his fighting skills.
Georges Laraque trains Matt Rempe and Tyrel Bauer for hockey fighting in Edmonton
A big 6-foot-7, 241-pound rookie, Matt Rempe started playing for the New York Rangers in the 2023-24 season. He showed his scoring skills and gained a reputation for being scrappy.
On July 9, 2024, ex-Edmonton Oilers player Georges Laraque tweeted about training Rempe and Tyrel Bauer in hockey fighting in Edmonton. Laraque suggested Rempe could make a bigger impact in the upcoming season.
"I’m training Matt Rempe and Tyrel Bauer for hockey fighting, this week in Edmonton, at the Silent Ice arena. If you thought Rempe was a problem this year in the @NHL, wait till you see him this coming season…," Laraque shared on X.
Despite his size, he didn't shy away from physicality and participated in five fights over 17 NHL games. He also scored eight goals in 43 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL.
