"That adds some spice" - Hockey fans react as Edmonton Oilers officially signs forward Mike Hoffman to a PTO

The Edmonton Oilers signed Mike Hoffman on Wednesday to a professional tryout for their training camp. Hoffman brings experience from 745 NHL games and 33 playoff matches. He scored 10 goals and 13 assists with the San Jose Sharks last season.

Hoffman was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2009. He has tallied 228 goals and 259 assists in the regular season, plus 11 goals and nine assists in the playoffs.

The Edmonton Oilers posted the signing on X (formerly Twitter):

"The #Oilers have signed forward Mike Hoffman to a professional tryout. The 34-year-old has recorded 228 goals & 259 assists in 745 career @NHL games."

Fans reacted to the post on the platform.

"that adds some spice to the 4th line centre battle!" One fan tweeted.
"Why am I for this ? Our team is so stacked I just feel we can elevate any player. How could anyone ve upset? Its ZERO risk for Oilers only some offense to gain if it works. We will avg. 5GF+ per game so.... try for 6," another fan tweeted.
"Lol. He was sooo bad on mtl, my gawd. I thought for sure a d man or a surprise surprise goalie. But noooo, itsa me Mike Hofffminnn. No way he passes the PTO," one X user tweeted.

Fans have mixed opinions, from doubt to approval. Here are some more reactions from NHL fans on X:

"C'mon bud. Hoffman is washed. Give it up. Buddy can barely move," another fan tweeted.
"Crazy so many people crying about this? He’s literally just there to fill the roster for preseason. Oilers fan be crying at things they don’t understand," one fan tweeted.
"Something nice about Mike Hoffman: his presence on the Sharks roster last season brought Celebrini on the roster this season. For that reason, Sharks fans are grateful," another fan tweeted.

San Jose Sharks move on from Mike Hoffman

Mike Hoffman had a tough season with the San Jose Sharks. He scored just 10 goals and 23 points in 66 games, his lowest totals in over a decade. Hoffman's performance was weak at even strength, and he relied heavily on power play opportunities.

His effort on the ice was also lacking. He had few hits and drew few penalties. An undisclosed injury ended his season early in April. Sharks chose not to re-sign him after his contract expired. The Edmonton Oilers have signed Hoffman to a PTO.
