“The goal is to win a cup”: Canucks’ Elias Pettersson shares insights on team goals and building on last season’s success
As the Vancouver Canucks prepare for the 2024-25 NHL season, alternate captain Elias Pettersson has his sights set on bringing the Stanley Cup back to Vancouver. Entering his seventh season with the Canucks, the 25-year-old Pettersson is ready to build on the success from last year and take the next step towards contending.
"The goal is to win a cup, that is always our mindset when we start the year," said Pettersson to the media.
"It's about how to get there. It’s day-by-day, continuing to get better, work on details, work on personal things in the gym, etc. It’s something that both the coaches and players understand. This is just the new culture that we built last year."
After a disappointing second-round playoff exit against the Edmonton Oilers last season, Pettersson took some time over the summer to rest and reset mentally and physically.
"It's a new season. We are taking the stuff we did well, but then we're going to raise the bar and continue to not be satisfied because it is not going to come easy," explained Pettersson. "I think we got some respect now in the league and we have a hungry group with hungry coaches."
Elias Pettersson is coming off a career year where he tallied 34 goals and 89 points in 82 games. He'll look to build on that success as he enters the first year of his 8-year, $92.8 million contract extension signed last March.
Fans react to Elias Pettersson's comments on team goals next season
Elias Pettersson's remarks regarding the team's objectives for the season have ignited discussions among fans. Some fans appreciate his confidence, while others remain skeptical.
One fan tweeted:
"He seems chill and confident, that's all I need to see. See ya in October"
Another fan noted,
"Pettersson can preach about raising the bar, but until this team proves it can consistently perform when it matters, it's just talk. Pairing him with DeBrusk and Lekkerimäki sounds promising, but we’ve seen "potential" fizzle out too many times in Vancouver."
Here are some fan reactions:
"Nice to see him back and positive :)" one fan wrote on X.
"He isn't the most talktive guy. He likes to keep to himself, as stated with the question on his private life. So having that spotlite with the contract last year. Probably affected him a lot mentally." another fan wrote.
"He looked disgusted almost talking about his playoffs." a user commented.
"He sounds like Tocchet. This is good." another user wrote.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Elias Pettersson and Vancouver to see if they can turn these ambitious goals into reality on the ice.
