"They clearly don't know the person": Kris Letang addresses rumors of Sidney Crosby's exit from Pittsburgh Penguins before signing $17.4M extension

Kris Letang addressed rumors about teammate Sidney Crosby possibly leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before Crosby signed his new two-year $17.4 million contract extension, there was much speculation about his future.

In an interview with the media posted by the Penguins' X account, Letang responded to these rumors with surprise and frustration. He said at the 1:30 mark,

"That's your job to make up stuff, so it's not mine," Letang said, referring to the media.

Letang implied that those spreading the rumors didn't understand Crosby or his dedication to the team. He had always expected Crosby to stay, no matter when the deal was done.

"They clearly don't know the person. They clearly don't know much about anything, if you ask me. But I didn't even think that would be a possibility. Yeah, but it's not only that (imagining Crosby in a different NHL sweater)..."
"Not at all, like, whether it was going to be July 1 or October 13, I don't care, like it's in my mind he was going (always) to wear those colors," Letang added.

On September 16, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas announced Crosby's extension. This deal keeps Crosby with the Penguins until the 2026-27 season, his 20th year with the team.

At 37, Sidney Crosby continues to set records. He holds the Penguins’ records for most games played, even-strength goals, and game-winning goals. He is in the top 10 for both NHL career points (1,596, 10th) and point-per-game average (1.25, 8th).

Crosby also leads in Penguins playoff stats and is in the Triple Gold Club, which includes winning a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, and a World Championship.

Sidney Crosby hopes for Penguins' improvement with new players and momentum

The Pittsburgh Penguins missed the playoffs by three points last season. An 8-2-2 late-season run was promising but fell short. Sidney Crosby, now signed through 2027, noted that “close doesn’t get you anywhere,” showing the team’s frustration.

Sidney Crosby is hopeful for the new season. He believes new players like Michael Bunting bring fresh energy to the team.

“I thought we stuck together. I'm hoping that experience and going through that is something that we can build off of here starting the year...,” Crosby said (via NHL.com).

Crosby thinks the late-season momentum and team unity can help improve the team this year.

"But I think there's a little momentum to build off of there. I think if you look at the year before, our game was probably trending the other way...,” he added.

The veteran trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang continue to lead the Penguins. The team struggled with consistency last season, but Crosby's new contract shows his commitment to keeping the team competitive.
