Tom Wilson quips waiting for one-of-two tokens of apology from Jakob Chychrun for his sinus-bone breaking wrist shot

ARJUN B

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson quipped that he's waiting for Jakob Chychrun to give him "one-of-two tokens of apology" for the bone-breaking wrist shot that caught Wilson in the face on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens.

In the first period, Wilson was struck in the left cheek by a blistering slapshot from his teammate and defenseman Chychrun. Wilson immediately left to the locker room as the impact left his face badly swollen. However, he returned after a few minutes and scored two goals in the Capitals' 4-2 victory.

It was later found that the puck had fractured one of the bones in Wilson's sinus cavity. When asked about the incident at Wednesday's practice, Wilson said with a laugh:

"Yeah, waiting to see if it’s dinner or a bottle of wine. No, he can rip the puck that is for sure, but he has been great for us, and I told him just keep shooting the puck, keep doing what you are doing because it's working."

Chychrun apologized to Wilson over social media after the game, writing on Instagram:

"Love this guy. Absolute nail gun. Way to carry us brotha @tomwilson. P.S. I’m sorry."

Wilson's lighthearted comments suggest he has accepted Chychrun's apology and is ready to move forward.

Tom Wilson's experience after getting hit in the face with a puck

After the game, Tom Wilson gave an account of the incident and how he returned to the ice shortly after.

"When the puck hits you, I feel like the side of my face is falling off a little," Tom Wilson said. "Am I bleeding, am I cut? What's going on?"

Despite the jarring impact, Wilson said that he did some quick self-evaluations on the bench and didn't feel any major damage was done. So, he returned to the game few minutes later.

On his return to play, Wilson said:

"I was kinda told growing up if you're good to play, you play. Did a couple tests and was good enough to get back out there," Wilson said.

With a bit of dry humor regarding his swollen face, he acknowledged that he wouldn't look his best the next morning. The Capitals next face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night at Nationwide Arena.
