"We crying about a bust?"; "Let the firesale begin": NY Rangers fans react to Kaapo Kakko trade to Seattle Kraken
Fans reacted on social media as the New York Rangers traded forward Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday, receiving defenseman Will Borgen, a third and a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft in return.
Kakko was selected No. 2 overall by New York in the 2019 NHL draft and has 14 points in 30 games this season. The move prompted strong reactions from Rangers fans on X/Twitter.
One fan tweeted:
"We crying about a bust?"
Another fan said:
"Let the firesale begin."
Here are some more reactions from fans on X:
"I always had hope for him, at times he would really move the puck and make good passes, but he always hesitated with shooting the puck, I think he lacked confidence in his shot !! I wish him well !!! LGR !!!" one fan wrote.
"Bro speaks up about Drury being the problem, get's benched next day, traded the following. What a shit show. F**K DRURY," another fan said.
"Lucky Kaapo Kakko! Doesn’t have to deal with Drury’s mess. Trade me as well!" a fan commented.
"I don’t have a problem with trading Kakko per se. What the hell was the point of this deal though? They basically gave him away for nothing," one fan added.
The team has struggled mightily after winning the Presidents' Trophy last season. The Rangers have lost 11 of their last 14 games and currently sit sixth in the Metropolitan division with a 15-15-1 record.
The team also recalled center Matt Rempe from the AHL while assigning defenseman Victor Mancini.
NHL analyst's take on Kaapo Kakko trade
Kaapo Kakko had voiced frustration about being a healthy scratch just a day before the trade. Kakko was back in the lineup for Tuesday's 3-0 defeat to the Nashville Predators after being healthy scratched during Sunday's 3-2 loss against the St. Louis Blues.
"I have not been the worst guy, but that was me out of the lineup...I think it’s just easy to pick a young guy and boot him out,” Kakko said during Tuesday's practice via TheHockeyNews.com.
This led some to speculate that Kakko's comments may have prompted the Rangers to trade him. However, analyst Kevin Weekes reported that the trade was not connected to Kakko's remarks.
Weekes wrote:
"Per sources, I'm told the Kakko trade was in no way connected to his comments yesterday. #NYR like and respect him. He's a pending RFA and 1 yr away from UFA, this move is best for both sides, they wish him nothing but the best."
According to Weekes, the timing of the trade appears to be coincidental rather than related to Kakko's comments about being benched.
