"What a useless player" "Get him out of the league": NHL fans react as NY Rangers' Matt Rempe gets suspended for eight games

New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe received an eight-game suspension on Sunday for a hit on Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen. The 6-foot-9, 255-pound right-winger laid an elbow to the back of Heiskanen's head in the third period of the Rangers' 3-1 win on Friday night.

Rempe was assessed a major penalty and was ejected for the hit, the fourth time he's been ejected in his short 22-game NHL career. It was Rempe's first game back in the Rangers lineup since Nov. 25. This will be his second career suspension, with his first coming in last season for an elbow on New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler.

Fans on X have reacted to the news on the length of Rempe's suspension.

"Get him out the league tbh," one fan wrote.
"What a useless player," another fan wrote.
"Not enough," one fan wrote.

Several other fans shared their thoughts, not pleased to see the suspension was only eight games.

"Not enough, was hoping for 12 or more, this kid needs to learn," wrote one fan wrote.
"Eight games is lenient for this player who should never see another NHL game," another fan added.
"Should've been a min of 10," another fan added.

Rangers lost to Hurricanes in Matt Rempe's absence on Sunday afternoon

Without Matt Rempe, the Rangers fell 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon. While Rempe has only produced two points (one goal, one assist) in 22 games, the Rangers could miss his intimidating presence. New York was shut down by the Hurricanes' defensive structure, seeing their record fall to 16-16-1 on the season.

The Rangers will get used to life without Rempe for the next few games, and it's no guarantee he will return to the NHL once his suspension concludes. He's suited up for just five games with the Rangers this season and recorded zero points.

The Rangers will hit the ice again tomorrow afternoon in New Jersey to face the Devils in their final clash before their holiday break. The puck drops at 1 p.m. ET at Prudential Center.
