NHL Rumor: Maple Leafs reportedly pursuing UFA forward Max Pacioretty

The Toronto Maple Leafs may soon make a move to add a veteran winger to their roster. The Maple Leafs have yet to add any forwards to their roster this entire offseason.

According to The Leafs Nation's Nick Alberga, Toronto remains in the running to sign unrestricted free agent winger Max Pacioretty.

After Alberga's report, NHL insider David Pagnotta confirmed that the Leafs do have an interest in Pacioretty. The deal would also be a standard contract rather than a pro tryout.

"Hearing same re Leafs/Pacioretty. This would be a SPC, not a PTO, if they agree to terms," Pagnotta tweeted.

Pacioretty would be a middle-six forward for the Maple Leafs, as the team has some question marks at left wing. Nick Robertson would be Toronto's second-line left winger, but he is an RFA and has requested a trade.

If the Maple Leafs do sign Pacioretty, he would help fill the void of Robertson if he does stand firm on his trade request and not playing.

Pacioretty has skated in 902 NHL games, recording 330 goals and 338 assists for 668 points. Last season, the winger played in 47 games with the Washington Capitals, recording four goals and 19 assists for 23 points.

Maple Leafs GM not ruling out making more moves

Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has had a quiet offseason this summer.

Treliving added defenseman Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and goalie Anthony Stolarz. All those moves happened on July 1, and since then, Toronto has done nothing. However, Treliving hinted at the team making more moves.

“To me, we've still got five weeks or so till camp. And, you know, we're not set yet. We continue to look at ways to make our team better," Treliving said on OverDrive on TSN 1050. "I said at the end of the year we're going to look at everything. Sometimes people fall in love with ' 'let's make a big change just to make a big change'.
"At the end of the day, you can go out and make big changes. If they're not making your team better, to me it doesn't make any sense to just make a change just to stand up and say 'look at it, we made this big change.'"

The Maple Leafs have just over $1.2 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia.

Toronto will open its 2024-25 NHL season on Oct. 9 against the Montreal Canadiens.
