NHL Rumors: Analyst reveals pathway for Hurricanes to retain Martin Necas and two key RFAs
The Carolina Hurricanes and Martin Necas have yet to agree to a contract extension this summer. While extending the 25-year-old center is likely high up on the team's priority list, they have had their hands full with several other pressing matters.
After the end of the 2023-24 NHL season, the team parted ways with GM Don Waddell. In addition, the team also acquired a new president, marking a busy start to the offseason. Now, with things settled down, the team can focus on bolstering the roster for the season ahead.
One of the most pressing matters is the future of Martin Necas, who is a restricted free agent. After the Stanley Cup Final, Necas joined 13 other players in filing for arbitration, raising questions about his future with the team.
While the Carolina Hurricanes notably included Martin Necas in trade offers leading up to the deadline, NHL analyst Cory Lavalette believes there's a way the Hurricanes can retain Necas, as well as Jack Drury and Seth Jarvis. In an article for the NY Times, Lavalette wrote:
"The Hurricanes have $13 million to $14 million in cap space — depending on how things shake out with the roster in training camp — to sign Necas, Drury and Seth Jarvis, so a one-year deal in the $5.5 million to $6.5 million range for Necas would leave plenty for room for bridge deals for the remaining two RFAs."
Looking at the offseason so far for the Carolina Hurricanes, and Martin Necas' future with the team
Currently, with the two sides set to go to arbitration, the expectation is that Martin Necas and the Carolina Hurricanes will agree to a one-year deal. At the same time, the team notably lost Jake Guentzel and Teuvo Teravainen this summer as well, raising questions about the season ahead.
Given that they will have $13-14 million in cap space, they'll have to get creative as they look to fill the gaps in their roster. After the team named Eric Tulsky as its GM back in late June, he spoke with media members about the season ahead.
As he explained, regardless of how you spin it, this summer will see the Carolina Hurricanes go through some roster turnover, regardless of whether or not they retain Martin Necas, Jack Drury and Seth Jarvis.
“This is a tough summer. We are going to lose some really good players. It’s hard to get through that and keep getting better. But I didn’t sign up for an easy job.”
Of course, for a team that was eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it may be challenging for Carolina to continue to get better given how many valuable assets it has lost.
Despite that, the recently-appointed Tulsky is up for the challenge.
