NHL Rumors: Insider dismisses possibility of Canucks trading for Martin Necas

The Vancouver Canucks are interested in trading for Martin Necas, but one NHL insider doesn't believe it's going to happen. There has been a lot of interest in Necas as he attempts to land a better contract in arbitration and his long-term future is up in the air, but the Canucks might not be the team to spring a move for him.

NHL analyst Jeff Paterson wrote for CanucksArmy's Monday Mailbag:

"Free agency may have changed the club’s approach. They were able to add pieces without parting with assets. Never say never, but right now, it just doesn’t feel like a match."

Paterson noted that the rumors have largely dissipated for now. Questions were swirling all draft weekend, but the Carolina Hurricanes still have Necas. Paterson reported that the Canes made the winger a qualifying offer to retain his rights and he filed for salary arbitration. Depending on what happens there, Necas may not be switching teams after all.

Whether or not it's to the Vancouver Canucks, there is still a strong possibility that Martin Necas is traded. The Carolina Hurricanes have had a very interesting offseason, and it could continue with another blockbuster deal.

NHL insider Frank Corrado believes the Winnipeg Jets' interest in Necas and the Hurricanes' pursuit of Nikolaj Ehlers could prompt a trade between those two teams down the line.

“If Martin Necas’ name is out there, and we’ve heard that for quite a while now, it would have to be him coming back in return, wouldn’t it?” he said on TSN.

Much of this hinges on how things go in arbitration and what the Hurricanes can accomplish otherwise, but the possibility is there for a deal.
