NHL Rumors: Top insider speculates dilemma for $29.1 Million Elias Lindholm amid rumored Canucks extension
On Tuesday, NHL insiders discussed Elias Lindholm's future with the Vancouver Canucks. Lindholm will soon be free agent and must choose between money or the right team. NHL insider Darren Dreger talked about Lindholm's strong negotiating position as there is a scarcity of top-quality centers in free agency.
"There's been preliminary discussions; everything is amicable. But the market for centers isn't that deep when you look at the potential unrestricted free agents. So, is Elias Lindholm looking for the most money possible or the best fit? That's what he and his family are going to have to come to terms with," Dreger said (via TSN).
Lindholm's last contract with the Calgary Flames, signed in July 2018, was a six-year deal worth $29,100,000. This contract sets a benchmark for his market value. Lindholm didn't quite meet expectations during his time with the Canucks. He scored 12 points in 26 games. However, during the playoffs, he recorded 10 points in 13 games.
"I think Vancouver likes the idea of keeping him around, but can they afford him? On the open market as a centerman, you know he's going to demand a fair amount," Dreger added.
During his time with the Calgary Flames, Lindholm had impressive output. He scored 82 points in the 2021-2022 season. In the Canucks' lineup, he was placed on the second line with Dakota Joshua and Conor Garland. Now, the Canucks will have to find a fitting replacement if Lindholm leaves.
Boston Bruins could try to acquire Elias Lindholm
The Boston Bruins have had their eye on Elias Lindholm for a while. They haven't been able to secure him in the past. Now, with Lindholm likely leaving the Vancouver Canucks due to financial constraints, the Bruins see an opportunity.
“We talked about how Canucks were willing to go 7 times 7 for Lindholm. It doesn't look like that's going to happen. So, Canucks are looking at this like we probably can't keep Lindholm, what is our next option?” Elliotte Friedman said (via Jeff Marek Show).
The Canucks offered Lindholm a big contract, but it might not be enough. If Elias Lindholm becomes a free agent, the Bruins will likely make a move. Lindholm could be a valuable addition as a top-six center as he excels in both offense and defense. If he joins the Bruins, he will be one of their top centers.
