NHL Trade Rumors: Hurricanes pushing aggressively for $42,000,000 forward
The Carolina Hurricanes lost a forward this offseason, but they are in heavy pursuit of another one. After failing to reach the finals again despite being one of the best teams in the league, they are attempting to revamp and push the team to new heights. That may include a blockbuster trade soon.
NHL insider Stefen Rosner said on X, formerly known as Twitter:
"There are reports that CAR is pushing heavily for Ehlers. Can confirm those reports. Make sense with them losing Guentzel. Isles had interest leading up to NHL Draft. Could still have interest even after acquiring Duclair but not sure."
Reports indicate that the Hurricanes are heavily involved with Nikolaj Ehlers, star forward for the Winnipeg Jets on a $42 million contract. After losing Jake Guentzel to the Tampa Bay Lightning, it's a position they need to invest in and might do so with this trade.
Rosner noted that they are not the only team with interest in Ehlers. The New York Islanders reportedly had interest ahead of the NHL Draft, but they may or may not still be looking into a trade after landing Anthony Duclair.
Carolina Hurricanes may only get one year of Nikolaj Ehlers
Nikolaj Ehlers was expected to be moved at the NHL Draft since he has just one year left on his deal and is unlikely to be extended by the Winnipeg Jets. However, the draft came and went and the 28-year-old remained with the Jets.
The rental nature of Ehlers makes him a slightly cheaper option to pursue for the Carolina Hurricanes. He won't be around for very long, but it will require fewer assets. That's how they've done it the last few years, as Guentzel was also a trade acquisition that didn't stick around after the rental ended.
The Hurricanes have seen a bit of a mass exodus in free agency. Tuevo Teravainen, Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce, and Stefan Noesen have joined Guentzel in leaving for a new team. Thus, the need to fill those holes and more is there, and the Hurricanes are aggressively pursuing a star forward as a result.
