"Had to do boyfriend duties last night" - Noah Lyles on how he became 'saviour of spikes' for girlfriend Junelle Bromfield after 100m triumph
Noah Lyles spoke about performing his "boyfriend duties" for girlfriend Junelle Bromfield ahead of her 400m heats. The American has had an impressive start to his Paris Olympics campaign, winning the 100m gold.
Noah Lyles edged out Kishane Thompson in the final to win his second Olympic medal, adding to his 200m bronze in Tokyo 2020.
Speaking to the media after his win, Noah Lyles said that he had boyfriend duties to perform after his 100m win, having to pick up his girlfriend's bag which had her spikes from the Airbnb they were living in. The 27-year-old said that he was the "saviour of spikes" besides being the Olympic champion.
"I watched her on TV while I was having treatment. I had to do boyfriend duties last night. I had to go and pick up her bag from our Airbnb and bring it to her late, late last night. So not only was I the Olympic champion, I was the saviour of the spikes last night," Lyles said.
Bromfield made it through to the semifinals of the 400m after clocking 51.36 seconds in the heats. She was also part of Jamaica's 4×400m mixed relay team, which finished fifth in the final behind Netherlands, United States, Great Britain and Belgium.
Noah Lyles also said that he "couldn't really"enjoy his gold medal in the 100m event considering he still had multiple races to finish. The 27-year-old also said that he wouldn't sleep properly until the relays are over, referring to his participation in the 4x100m competition.
"I can’t really enjoy it yet because when you’re a champion, and you’ve got multiple races to do, you can’t celebrate until you get the job done. As for sleep, that’s not until the relays are over," Noah Lyles said.
The 27-year-old won his 200m heat after clocking 20.19 seconds, thus qualifying for the semifinals. He beat out Tokyo 2020 champion Andre DeGrasse, among others.
Lyles will run in semifinal 2 of the 200m event in Lane 6. His third event is the 4x100m relay, the first round of which will start on August 8 and the final will take place on August 9.
