How many medals did USA Fencing squad win at Tokyo Olympics? A look at their performance as they head to Paris
The USA Fencing squad collected two medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, including a gold and a bronze. A 24-member USA Fencing squad represented the nation at the event.
For the United States, Lee Kiefer won the only gold medal in Tokyo in the women’s individual foil, while the bronze was won by the men’s team foil that featured Race Imboden, Nick Itkin, Alexander Massialas and Gerek Meinhardt.
Lee Kiefer, who received a bye in the first round, beat Amita Marie Nicolette Berthier, Eleanor Grace Harvey, Yuka Ueno and Larisa Viktorovna Korobeynikova to reach the final
In the gold medal match, she beat the Russian Olympic Committee fencer Inna Vasilyevna Deriglazova to become the Olympic champion. Kiefer beat the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist 15-13 in a nail-biting contest to claim her first Olympic medal.
Meanwhile, the USA Fencing team comprising Nick Itkin, Alexander Massialas, Race Imboden and Gerek Meinhardt began their campaign by beating Germany in the quarters by 45-36.
However, their quest for the gold was halted by the ROC, as they lost 45-41 in a close contest. The USA made a great comeback to win the bronze following a comprehensive 45-31 victory over Japan.
A look into the USA Fencing squad for the Paris Olympics 2024
Fencing is all set to take center stage from July 27 to August 4 at the Grand Palais in Paris. The USA Fencing team comprises a 20-member squad for the upcoming quadrennial games.
Defending champion Lee Kiefer will be heading to her fourth Olympics, having previously competed at the 2012 London, 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, three of the four members from the bronze-medal winning team in team foil in Tokyo - Nick Itkin, Alexander Massialas and Gerek Meinhardt - will be present at the Paris Olympics. They will be joined by Miles Chamley-Watson, who is renowned not only for his fencing career but also for his appearances on Fashion Week runways.
The USA Fencing squad also includes the 2023 men’s sabre individual world champion Eli Dershwitz among other athletes.
