Meet Alex Yee: Everything you need to know about the Olympic triathlon champion who is set to make his marathon debut in 2025
Alex Yee is one of Great Britain’s best triathletes in recent years, and he's had a fantastic 2024. His year has seen him win both the World Championships as well as the Olympics, with his gold in Paris making him the most decorated Olympic triathlete of all time.
After dominating the triathlon, Yee recently announced his intentions to compete at the 2025 London Marathon. This will mark the Brit's debut in the distance, and as he gets ready to take on this new challenge, here is everything you need to know about him.
Alex Yee’s family and hometown
Yee was born on 18 February 1998, to Ron Yee and Emma Amos Yee. The triathlete’s father is Mozambique-born Chinese, while his mother is English. He was raised in Lewisham, London.
Alex Yee's education
Yee completed his primary education at the Stillness Infant School and Stillness Junior School in Honor Oak Park. He then moved on to the Kingsdale Foundation School in West Dulwich and later earned a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Leeds Beckett University.
Alex Yee's coach
Yee is currently coached by Adam Elliott, the Head Coach at the Loughborough High Performance Centre. In 2023, Elliot was named High-Performance Coach of the Year by the UK Coaching Awards. Speaking about his coach, the Olympic champion has called him ‘amazing', saying (as quoted by Tri247),
“I’ve been really lucky to have Adam as my coach for the last three to four years. He’s been amazing, he’s always gone above and beyond. He’s always working hard behind the scenes, and he wants the best for us.”
Alex Yee's triathlon career
Yee marked himself as one to watch out for as early as 2016 when he won the ITU World Junior Duathlon Championships in Avilés. A handful of years later, the 26-year-old made his ITU World Triathlon Series in 2019, finishing fifth in a Standard Distance event in Japan.
In 2020, Yee qualified for his debut Olympics, winning a silver in the individual triathlon and a gold in the mixed relay. Later that same year, he was crowned champion at the 2021 Super League Triathlon Championship Series. In 2022, the Brit competed at the Commonwealth Games, winning gold medals in individual and relay events. 2022 also saw him win a gold and silver at the World Triathlon Sprint Distance Championships.
Most recently, Yee's 2024 season saw him claim gold at the World Championships, before winning at the Paris Olympics. His campaign in France also saw him win bronze in the mixed relay.
Alex Yee's marathon debut and his targets for London 2025
After several dominant performances in the triathlon event over the years, Yee is now ready to tackle a different challenge. The Brit recently announced that he would be making his marathon debut in London in 2025.
Speaking to the Guardians, the Olympic champion laid down his targets for the race, saying,
“I want to give it a real go. I know it’s a challenge doing it in a six-month window. But if the planets align, I’d love to run in the ballpark of 2hrs 7 [mins] to 2:10.”
Alex Yee went on to explain that muscular endurance would be his biggest concern going into the race, saying:
“The physiology is not going to be the biggest challenge – it’s the muscular endurance and the load that I’ll take throughout the marathon. The top guys are doing 120-mile weeks, week in, week out. But I’m not going to be able to match that. So how will my legs feel when I get to 35km and when everyone says the real race starts?
“I know there’s no easy way around a marathon. I’ve got to give the distance the respect it deserves, I’ve seen a lot of amazing athletes be humbled really quickly in their first marathon. I’m well aware that could be me. But I’m preparing the best I can, and hopefully I can be part of a historic day,” he added.
The 2025 London Marathon is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 27. The marathon will feature some of the best racers in the world going head-to-head, and fans will be curious to see where Yee stands amongst them.
