Gabby Douglas gives emotional reaction to her all-around gold winning moment from 2012 London Olympics
Gabby Douglas recently reacted to a video of her winning gold in the all-around event at the London Olympics. The gymnast is one of the most decorated gymnasts in America, holding three Olympic golds as well as two World Championship titles.
The gymnast etched her name in history books after becoming the first African American to win a gold medal in the all-around event at the 2012 Summer Games. She trounced the Russian athlete, Viktoria Komova, and became the fourth American woman after Mary Lou Retton, Carly Patterson, and Nadia Liukin to win gold in this event.
Gabby Douglas is still respected for this exceptional achievement, as one of her fans shared a video of the special moment from the 2012 London Olympics. The video carried the caption:
"12 years ago Gabrielle Douglas made history by becoming the first African American gymnast to win gold in the All Around. Forever a trailblazer."
The gymnast re-shared the video and reacted to one of the most historic moments of her life by adding two emojis displaying her overwhelmed emotions:
"🥹🥹"
Along with this gold medal, Douglas won another gold medal in the team event at the 2012 London Olympics and added one more medal to her tally in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro by standing atop the podium with her team in the team all-around event.
Gabby Douglas opened up about her mindset after winning prize money at the London Olympics
In a recent conversation with Vivian Tu on September 11 in an interview, Gabby Douglas opened up about how the success she received after the 2012 Olympics brought a notable change in her life. She revealed that she and her family did not grow up with a lot of money, so every little deal meant a lot to her.
"We didn't grow up with money. So even when the smallest, the smallest deal came in, I thought it was a lot of money. We didn't have that lifestyle of Cartier and Louis Vuitton. It was very, very simple. And so, in our heads, it was like, okay, we're getting somewhere you know. We came from $0 or $15 in the bank to this amount. I was so happy, I was like ‘oh my goodness, we got bank’.”
Gabby Douglas went through a hard time in 2024 as she had hoped to make a comeback after a long hiatus from gymnastics; however, her first competition, the 2024 Winter Cup, was canceled because she got COVID-19, which forced her to withdraw from the competition. Following this, she competed at the US Core Hydration Classic, but she had to pull out after the first round because of her ankle injury.
Following this injury, she had to withdraw her name from the US Championships, which took away her chances of competing at the US Olympic trials, hence shattering her Paris dreams. The 28-year-old, however, will still eye for a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
