Grant Holloway takes a dig at Brussels organizers as Diamond League announces over $9 million prize money for 2025 season

Olympic gold medalist Grant Holloway recently took a dig at the Brussels Diamond League, also known as the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, after opting out of the Finals scheduled for September 13-14, 2024. This follows an announcement by the Wanda Diamond League regarding an increase in prize money for the regular season meets and the finals.

Holloway was looking to reclaim his Diamond League Final title in the 110m hurdles this month, having won it back in 2022 and finishing as the runners-up in the finals held in Eugene last year. He showed his consistency by securing wins at the 2024 Diamond League series meets in Eugene, Monaco, and Zurich. However, the 26-year-old skipped the Brussels Diamond League Finals after his team and the event organizers couldn't agree on participation terms.

“I will not be participating in the Brussels Diamond League Final due to a failure to reach agreements on the terms of my participation between my team and the meeting directors of the Diamond League. Shame that they doing athletes like that.. #BrusselsDL #NeverCompeteForLess,” Holloway tweeted on his X handle.

A track and field fan suggested a possible reason for the failed agreement as they believed it to be due to Brussels reportedly paying little to no appearance fees. They said:

“The Brussels meet director is known to pay less to no appearance fees. Grant stood on business and his worth. Good on him.”

Holloway didn’t deny the statement by the fan and quoted:

“Trash a** track meet”

Recently, with new competitions like Athlos NYC and the Grand Slam Track League set to commence, the Wanda Diamond League organizers have responded by increasing the league’s prize money. Regular series meets will now award between $30,000 and $50,000 per event, while the Diamond League final will offer between $60,000 and $100,000 per event, taking the 2025 season prize pool to over $9 million.

Following the announcement, Citius Mag shared the news with the track and field fans on their Instagram handle. The three-time world champion Holloway commented on the post and seemingly criticized the Brussels Diamond League. He said:

“Don’t host it at Brussels.”

Grant Holloway kicked off his 2024 season by participating in the indoor hurdles events, where he smashed his own world record at the US Indoor Championships with a 7.27s effort in the 60m hurdles and became the World Athletics Indoor Championships gold medalist for the second time after clocking a 7.29s in the 60m hurdles finals.

Holloway then dominated the 110m hurdles in the Paris Olympics by winning comfortably in a time of 12.99s. With this, he improved on the Olympic silver achieved at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with a time of 13.09s, finishing behind Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment (13.04s).
