How video footage from Netflix's 'Simone Biles: Rising' can help Jordan Chiles regain her medal? All about new developments in the Olympic controversy

Jordan Chiles has been on a rollercoaster ride after the conclusion of her floor routine at the Paris Olympics 2024. The gymnast initially placed fifth before an appeal by coach Cecile Landi was accepted and she moved to third place for the bronze medal, only to have to return it a few weeks later when Romania Gymnastics filed an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for sports.

While the USA Gymnastics and Olympic Committee tried to protest the decision, Chile eventually had to return the medal, which was later awarded to Romania's Ana Babosu after the Court found that her appeal at the Olympics was submitted beyond the one-minute allowed time limit.

Weeks after the decision, the American gymnast filed an appeal against the case through her legal team. A key part of her case is video evidence from her teammate and friend Simone Biles' Netflix docuseries.

The 23-year-old filed the appeal against the CAS decision on Monday in the Swiss Federal Tribunal. The video evidence in her documents was provided by director Katie Walsh and production company Religion of Sports, who were filming Biles inside the Bercy Arena. The video shows Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, submitting the gymnast's appeal allegedly within the allowed one-minute mark. If the court does accept it, the two-time Olympic medalist will become a three-time one.

Jordan Chiles was initially awarded a score of 13.666 for her floor routine, placing her fifth before Landi appealed, and her score adjusted to 13.766, securing her a maiden individual Olympic medal. Days after the Olympics, Romania Gymnastics argued in CAS that Chiles' appeal was submitted late and was accepted, leading to Chiles' score being readjusted to 13.666.

CAS had used the timing from Omega, an official partner of the Paris Olympics, to issue a ruling in the case earlier. However, with new evidence suggesting that Chiles' appeal was submitted within the timeframe, it would be interesting to see the outcome in the Swiss Federal Tribunal.

Soon after the reports that the Romania Gymnastics Federation would appeal in the CAS against Jordan Chiles' bronze medal, the American gymnast announced a break from social media. She remained off the spotlight before gradually embracing public life nearly a month later.

Speaking at a Forbes event following her appearance on VMT, Chiles broke down in tears talking about her bronze medal.

“The biggest thing that was taken from me was, it was the recognition of who I was. Not just my sport, but the person I am," she said.

The gymnast added that she had lost her love for the sport but was determined to fight for justice.
