"I was actually doing my signature skill"- Gabby Douglas opens up on the injury that forced her to withdraw from Paris Olympics 2024
Gabby Douglas' pursuit to qualify for the Paris Olympics ended recently. She withdrew from the US gymnastics championships due to an ankle injury that she sustained during her training, which eventually shattered her 2024 Summer Games dream. The gymnast has now opened up on the injury that led to her withdrawal from the Paris Olympics.
Douglas represented the USA at the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio Games. She had her eyes set on a third Olympics appearance after an eight-year hiatus. However, she will not be able to take part due to her ankle injury.
In a recent interview with People, the gymnast opened up about the injury that forced her to withdraw from the Paris Olympics. She revealed that she picked up the injury while performing her "signature skill," the standing full on the beam.
"It was very bittersweet," said Douglas. "And it was actually doing my signature skill, which is the standing full on the beam."
However, the 28-year-old has not lost all hope and is now eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
"I know it's four years away, but I'm looking forward to it. Still representing the USA, still continuing to do gymnastics, so I'm excited," Douglas said.
Gabby Douglas reveals her favorite part about gymnastics
Gabby Douglas also opened up on her favorite part of being a gymnast. She said that she loved the competition and the hustle behind it, and added that she loves trying new and different things in sports.
"My favorite part of the competition is the competition," said Douglas. "I love getting in the gym, challenging myself, and I have had a ball playing around with different skills."
She added:
“I'd never done a lot of the skills before. I never had done my bar connection, which was Healy, to link to Jaeger, and I had never done a Downie before. So it was very fun, doing different things and realizing, ‘Oh man, I still got it.’ "
Gabby Douglas went on an eight-year long hiatus and, in an interview with NBC, revealed that watching Simone Biles compete at the 2022 US Gymnastics Championships, made her miss the competition. She made her comeback at the American Classic this year, but injury prevented her from taking part at the Olympic Games. The American will now follow her quest to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
