"I don't know what's in the cards for me"-Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone weighs in on competing at the 2028 LA Olympics
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone recently shared her thoughts on the chances of competing in the third Olympics of her career in 2028. This comes a few days after she pulled off a record-breaking performance in the 400m hurdles final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Following her second Olympic campaign, the 25-year-old shed light on what she thinks the future holds for her. McLaughlin-Levrone didn't provide a concrete answer about her participation in the Los Angeles edition of the Olympics in 2028 but stated she would be quite pleased to contribute to the US Olympic campaign in any way. She said:
"I mean, I don't know what the future holds. I don't know what's in the cards for me, but bringing the Games back to the United States is going to be special in and of itself. And so, whether it's the 400 hurdles or any other event, it just would be an honor to compete for USA."
McLaughlin-Levrone successfully defended her 400m hurdles Olympic title in Paris, registering a new world record with a time of 50.37 seconds. Besides, the New Jersey native was also a part of the US women's 4x400m relay team that clinched the gold medal with a time of 3:15.27.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone opens up about 400m hurdles preference over open 400m
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has been one of the most successful 400m hurdlers in recent years. Her consecutive Olympic titles in Tokyo and Paris over this distance have displayed her prowess on the track for the world.
Along with her medals and titles in the 400m hurdles, she has also been successful in the open 400m, winning the US national title in 2023. However, even with this success in the event, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's go-to event remains the 400m hurdles.
In a recent interview with the Olympics.com, she opened up about how she viewed the two events. She stated:
"The open 400 is just a full-on sprint. But at least with the hurdles, I can think about something and have to work. There's certain things that kind of just distract you from the fact that you're running a 400. And I think that's why I love the hurdles."
Thus far in the 2024 season, the 25-year-old has competed in just one open 400m race, at the USATF New York City Grand Prix. She clinched a first-place finish in the event with a time of 48.75s, defeating the likes of Talitha Diggs, Stacy Ann Williams, and Kendall Ellis.
