"I'm going to break the 100m American record"- Noah Lyles eyeing Tyson Gay's 9.69s ahead of Paris Olympics 2024

Noah Lyles has made a huge statement ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024, claiming he would break the American record in the 100m. The record is currently held by Tyson Gay, who clocked 9.69s in 2009.

Lyles holds the American record in 150m, 200m, and 300m distances. While the world champion has held the 300m record since 2017, he became the fastest American in 200m in 2022 after clocking 19.31s at the World Championships and broke the 150m record this season with a time of 14.41s.

The 100m record is the only thing missing from Lyles’ resume, and it's also his weakest of the events. He holds a personal best of 10.83s in the event, 0.14s off from the American record held by Tyson Gay. However, the world champion has stated that he can breach the mark in 2024, and he has his coach's backing for that.

Speaking to Track World News in an interview, Noah Lyles claimed that his coach Lance Brauman told him in 2022 that he was gonna break the 200m American record, which he did break indeed. The 26-year-old claimed that Brauman has told him the same thing about the 100m dash.

“In 2022, coach came up later in the season and told me ‘I think you could break the American record in the 200m’ and we did it and he's come up to me and told me he believes that I can break the American record in the 100m”, he expressed.

Lyes added that irrespective of whether he was gonna break the record or not at the Paris Olympics 2024, he was still gonna win because he's ‘faster now, and stronger than you.'

“That's a hard pill to swallow for other competitors," Noah Lyles stated.

Noah Lyles’ ambitions of going after a historic four gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics are well known to everyone. He wants it because no sprinter has ever done it. But the only obstacle in his way is the 4x400m relay, which neither he is a specialist in nor has he run the 400m distance much in his career.

However, athletes for the 4x400m relay are picked from 100m, 200m, 400m, and 400m hurdles and Lyles does have a chance to be named part of the team in Paris if he manages to convince coaches.

“I've told the relay coaches the same thing as every year, ‘I'm available’,” he expressed via Sportstar.

Noah Lyles was picked in the 4x400m relay team at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. Although they won the silver medal, his inclusion caused an uproar on social media and it remains to be seen what the coaches decided at Paris Olympics 2024.
