"I realized that the TV really doesn’t do it justice" - When Simone Biles' husband Jonathan Owens reflected on watching wife perform
Simone Biles' husband, Jonathan Owens, once shared his amazement after watching her compete live for the first time. The couple tied the knot in April last year, and the NFL standout was proudly by Biles' side to cheer her on as she participated in her third Olympic Games in Paris this year.
It was during the US Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2021 when Owens watched his then-girlfriend Biles compete, for the first time. The 27-year-old reigned supreme at the competition and secured her seventh national all-around title. In awe of her high-flying maneuvers, Owens later remarked that TV screens could never do justice to what Biles achieves during the competitions.
Owens said (via Texas Monthly),
"Unbelievable. It’s so amazing to watch. When I saw her for the first time, I realized that the TV really doesn’t do it justice. When she goes out there and does it, it looks so effortless."
Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens first connected on the dating app Raya in 2020, with Biles initiating the conversation after they matched. Their relationship flourished during the COVID pandemic as both had breaks from their professional endeavors. After two years of dating, they got engaged in February 2022 and got married in April 2023.
At the Paris Olympics this year, Owens took a five-day break from pre-season training with the Chicago Bears to support Biles at the Games. Living up to expectations, Biles delivered a remarkable show and secured three gold medals and a silver to become the most decorated Olympic gymnast in US history, surpassing Shannon Miller.
"We would like compete so much" - When Simone Biles opened up about her competitive streak with Jonathan Owens
In an interview with Olympics.com last month, Simone Biles shared that while playing video games or cards with Jonathan Owens, he tends to be highly competitive.
In contrast, she said, she is more relaxed and not overly concerned about winning against him. Biles said,
"It is so much fun having two professional athletes and people think that we would, like, compete so much. He's competitive. I'm not competitive. If we're playing a video game or whatever or cards like, I think that's so much fun, and I don't care if I win or lose."
"Like he has to keep going until he wins because he's just like, that's his type of personality. But I think that's why he's so good on the field and why he's made it so far."
Owens accompanied Simone Biles during her Gold Over America Tour after the Paris Olympics.
