"I don't have any recollection of living with my dad"- Gabby Thomas opens up on being brought up by her mother after her parent's divorce
Gabby Thomas recently spoke about her relationship with her parents after their divorce. The athlete recently concluded her 2024 season after competing at the Athlos NYC meet.
Thomas had a terrific season this year as she concluded her Paris Olympics campaign with three gold medals. She won her first medal of the 2024 Summer Games in the 200m dash, where she clocked a time of 21.83s, trouncing Julien Alfred and Brittany Brown, who claimed second and third place, respectively. Following this, she competed in the 4x100m relay, where she and her team recorded 41.78s to stand atop the podium, making her clinch the second gold of the Olympics.
The 27-year-old won her third gold in the 4x400m relay, where she and her team clocked 3:27.15 to earn first place in the event. Weeks after this successful campaign in Paris, Thomas appeared in the podcast, 'Why Not Me?' by Mike Jackson', where she revealed her relationship with her parents after their divorce. She also spoke about her bond with her father and how her mother brought her up.
"I was in the household with her (her mom), so my dad, he didn't live with us so I actually watched my mom. I don't have any recollection of living with my dad. He didn't move to Massachusetts with us and he stayed in Atlanta. He's still in my life, my dad's a great guy but he just didn't raise me and I have a couple of other half siblings, so just a lot going on," said Thomas.
Gabby Thomas opened up about how her mother impacted her life journey
In an interview with Olympics.com, Gabby Thomas revealed that her mother's journey as a single parent has inspired her to do well in her career. She highlighted her mother's growth from having nothing to becoming a successful professor helped her believe in her goals.
"I think watching her as I was growing up and how hard she worked, that's impacted me in ways that I probably can't even recognise. Watching her be a single parent without two pennies to scrub together and working her way up and to being what she is now, a successful professor living out her dreams and starting a non-profit to help people get education," Gabby Thomas said.
She added:
"It really showed me what true work ethic was, and it showed me that you can achieve your dreams through hard work... [through that] and anything is possible."
Following the Paris Olympics, Gabby Thomas also competed in the Athlos NYC, where she ran the 200m; however, she ended up earning a second-place finish behind Brittany Brown.
