"I showcased that I was a person that was eager to learn" - Gabby Thomas on how she got into Harvard despite not being a genius
Gabby Thomas opened up about how she got admitted to Harvard University. The Olympic champion earned her bachelor's degree in neurobiology and global health from Harvard and then, her master's in public health from the University of Texas.
Thomas recently proved her prowess in the Paris Olympics, as she concluded the campaign with three gold medals. She won her first gold in the 200m dash, where she clocked 21.83s, trouncing Julien Alfred and Brittany Brown, who claimed second and third place, respectively. Following this, she earned two more golds in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay events, and clocked 41.78s and 3:27.15, respectively, with the respective teams.
On a podcast, 'Why Not Me?' with Mike Jackson, Thomas revealed the story about getting into Harvard. She shared that she was initially rejected by several universities such as LSU and Florida.
"I remember actually reaching out to universities and their track programs, and I mean, they just hit me back with their standards. I reached out to LSU,'sorry you're not fast enough'; reached out to Florida, you're not fast enough," said Thomas.
Gabby Thomas spoke about Harvard:
"For me it was like okay I was a decent athlete and I was a decent student. I was not the best student like, I'll say it here first I had a couple C's on me transcript. I was a normal student, I did my work but by no means I was a genius."
Thomas added:
"I'm very much like everybody, but I did things well, I did my best, and I was very consistent and so I was consistently decent at track and I was consistently decent in the classroom. During the application process and when I did my interviews, I showcased that I was a person that was eager to learn."
Gabby Thomas opened up about being forced by her mother to join track and field as her career
After wrapping up her 2024 Summer Games, Gabby Thomas appeared in an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she was seen in a conversation with the host, RuPaul. Here, she revealed the reason behind choosing track as her career.
Thomas extended gratitude towards her mother for making her choose track after she had chosen softball in the initial stage.
"Mom, I want to thank you so much for forcing me to do track and field. Thank you. You knew what you were doing," Thomas said. "I originally chose softball; I wanted to do it with my friends, you know, track and field was not my first love, soccer was. My friends were doing softball, so I signed up, but, my mother had another idea."
Thomas added:
"She made that decision for me. She said track and field; she signed me up, and I showed up to practice for first day, and never looked back"
Gabby Thomas concluded her 2024 season after competing at the Athlos NYC meet, where she ran in the 200m and earned a second-place finish.
