Jade Carey reveals why she missed a slot in the floor routine final at Paris Olympics
Defending champion Jade Carey intended to win her second title in the women’s floor exercise but failed to live up to the billing following an undisclosed illness she was battling.
She was flawless en route to her title at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and had hopes of repeating the same exploits, but failed to go past the qualifying round at the 2024 Olympics.
Carey finished fourth in Team USA in the qualifying round. According to the gymnastics rules at the Paris Olympics, only the top two gymnasts from each country would be allowed to proceed to the final.
In an exclusive interview with "Olympics.com" recently, Carey disclosed that she had been battling an illness and could not eat anything in her build-up to the qualifying round. She wanted to set the record straight and explain to her fans the challenge she was facing.
"I just have not been feeling well the past few days and haven't been able to eat or anything. I had, like, no energy today and didn't really have a sense of what was going on in my head. So, I just kind of wanted people to know that so, they know that there's actually something wrong," Carey said.
Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles cut the final of the floor exercise and finished second and third respectively. Andrade won the event.
However, the Oregon State University alumnus ounced back to record a score of 14.433 points on the vault routine and secure qualification to the final alongside Simone Biles.
