In Pictures: USA Gymnastics' hero Stephen Nedoroscik shares special moment with a fan having 'same eye condition as him' after Paris Olympics victory
History-making USA Gymnastics team member Stephen Nedoroscik's heartfelt interaction with a fan at the Paris Olympics 2024 has garnered attention on social media. Nedoroscik, a phenom of the Pomme Horse exercise, wears glasses during events as he suffers from a medical condition named strabismus.
The condition develops mainly in children under three and can cause blurry vision and a lack of depth perception. Wearing glasses or contacts is a remedy. Nedoroscik also has coloboma, a condition that emerges from missing eye tissues before birth.
The medal-winning athlete, meanwhile, met a fan who suffers from the same condition. USA Gymnastics posted pictures of the heartfelt interaction on X (formerly Twitter):
Stephen Nedoroscik, a mechanical engineer, was an important part of the USA Men's gymnastic team that won the bronze at the Paris Olympics 2024, ending their 16-year-old trophy drought.
Nedoroscik has also become an internet sensation following his contributions to the medal win. Several memes emerged on social media, with some even comparing his nerdy look to Superman's.
He recently revealed that he specifically enjoyed the Superman memes. Apart from Nedoroscik, Frederick Richard and Asher Hong also shone for Team USA in the finals as they bagged the bronze in Paris.
Team USA's Paris Olympics 2024 hero Stephen Nederoscik reveals how he competes without glasses
While Stephen Nedoroscik generally wears glasses, he takes them off when performing in the Pommel Horse. The Massachusetts native claimed that the glasses would fly off if he kept them on while competing.
When asked about how he sees without his glasses, he told TODAY that once he gets a feel of the equipment, it's not much of an issue. Nedoroscik said (via TODAY):
"The thing about pommel horse is if I keep them (glasses) on, they're gonna fly somewhere. When I go up on the pommel horse, it's all about feeling the equipment. I don't even really see when I am doing y gymnastics, it's all in the hands, I can feel everything."
Stephen Nedoroscik previously wore sports goggles at the start of his career. The Paris Olympics 2024 hero revealed they didn't have any prescribed power and were for rather superstitious reasons.
