Jordan Chiles leaves social media as gymnast's floor score from Paris Olympics gets reversed after CAS ruling
American artistic gymnast Jordan Chiles has chosen to step away from social media amid concerns that her medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics could potentially be revoked. Chiles had bagged the bronze medal in the women’s floor exercise at the quadrennial games.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that the appeal for Chiles’ score was filed 1 minute and 4 seconds late which exceeds the one-minute time limit. This means that Chiles may lose her bronze medal based on the scores. The report to the CAS was filed by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation after their two gymnasts Ana Bărbosu and Sabrina Voinea finished outside podium places.
Initially, Chiles was awarded 13.666 points on the day of the floor exercise final, which was changed to 13.766 points following the appeal by her team. However, after the CAS ruling, her score has been reverted to the original 13.666 points, placing her back in fifth position in the event.
In response to the news, Chiles expressed her feelings on Instagram by posting two stories. In one of them, she wrote:
"I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you."
In another story, she shared that she was heartbroken with the 'broken heart' emoji, added:
Notably, the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) now will be finalizing the floor exercise' finals rankings and give the medals based on the decision by the CAS.
Jordan Chiles’ campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024
Chiles had a mixed campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She couldn’t qualify for the finals of the individual all-around at the quadrennial games, despite coming fourth in the qualifications with a score of 56.065 points. This was due to the two gymnasts per National Olympic Committee (NOC) rule in the gymnastics finals.
Notably, Simone Biles and Suni Lee had achieved better scores in the qualifications, which gave them a nod to compete in the finals ahead of Chiles. Similarly, Chiles lost a spot in the women’s vault finals due to the similar rule.
However, Chiles played an instrumental role in the United States’ gold-medal triumph in the women’s all-around team event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the USA won, securing an overall score of 171.296 points. Out of which, Chiles scored 14.400 on the vault, 14.366 on the uneven bars, 12.733 on the balance beam, and 13.966 on the floor exercise.
