Julien Alfred shows off formal brown suit after being named finalist for Women’s Track Athlete of the Year 2024
Saint Lucia's reigning Olympic champion Julien Alfred flaunted her new look in a plaid suit today after being named a finalist for the Female Track Athlete of the Year award alongside Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the United States. Alfred made history at this year's Paris Olympics after becoming the first Olympic medalist of her country.
In August, the 23-year-old made her Olympic debut in the French capital and stunned the track and field world after defeating America's 100m gold favorite Sha'Carri Richardson in the finals. Alfred sprinted through the Stade de France to secure the first Olympic medal for St. Lucia in any sport with an impressive time of 10.72 seconds. She then claimed a silver medal in the 200m event after clocking 22.08 seconds, finishing just behind the United States' Gabby Thomas.
For her stellar achievements throughout the 2024 season, Alfred was nominated for the Female Track Athlete of the Year. She has advanced to the final round, where she will contend with McLaughlin-Levrone, the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay Olympic champion. Amid the update, Alfred shared a video on her Instagram story showcasing herself in a tailored brown plaid suit, accessorized with a gold bracelet and earrings.
Besides her Olympics success, the Ciceron native made her mark during the World Indoor Championship in March. Her victory in the 60m event marked St. Lucia's first track and field medal at a global competition. She capped off the 2024 season with a victory in the 100m event at the Diamond League finals in Brussels this September.
Julien Alfred reflects on her loss to Gabby Thomas - "My mentality going to the 200m final wasn't the same"
In an October conversation with SportsMax TV, Julien Alfred said she approached the 200m finals with a different mindset than the 100m, leading her to overthink the race:
"I think my mentality going to the (200m) final wasn't the same. So I'm really going to just try to change, and then I was just overthinking the final, like trying to think of each phase, and it was a lot happening. I should have just run it all out, and if Gabby catches me then so be it."
In recognition of Alfred's track achievements, Saint Lucia's Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre declared September 27 a national public holiday.
