Sha'Carri Richardson went to the Olympic Games hoping to win the Olympic gold medal in the women’s 100m final, but finished second behind Julien Alfred. Following her performance that got a lot of people talking, Richardson has shared a cryptic post on her Instagram stories.
In the women’s 100m, Richardson started her campaign impressively, winning the first round before finishing second behind Alfred in the semifinal. Going into the final, Richardson was a favourite to win.
But Alfred stopped the clock in a national record time of 10.72 seconds as Richardson came in second, clocking 10.87s to cross the finish line. Melissa Jefferson, going into the race as the underdog, rounded off the podium in a time of 10.92s.
However, Sha'Carri Richardson bounced back in the women’s 4x100m relay, ensuring Team USA impressed in the first round. In the final of the event, the reigning world champion came from behind to anchor USA to a gold medal in the race. Gabby Thomas, Twanisha Terry and Melissa Jefferson ran the first three legs.
Following the conclusion of the Olympic Games, Richardson shared a mysterious post on her stories saying:
"Keep your star player happy."
Richardson was off to a slow start to her season, finishing second and third competing at the Diamond League Meetings in Xiamen and Suzhou respectively. The American sprint queen then made a statement in the women’s 100m at the Prefontaine Classic, before cementing her place at the U.S. Olympic trials. Richardson won the Prefontaine Classic race in a time of 10.83s ahead of Alfred and Dina Asher-Smith.
At the U.S. Olympic trials, Richardson punched her ticket to the Olympic Games, with a world-leading time of 10.71s to win. She missed out on a slot in the 200m after finishing fourth.
Sha'Carri Richardson speaks about Gabby Thomas' impact on her at Paris Olympics
Sha'Carri Richardson opened up about how Gabby Thomas’ words of encouragement propelled her to win USA the 4x100m relay gold medal.
As she was being handed the baton, Team USA were trailing but Richardson came from behind to win. Talking about Gabby's influence, she said (via Refinery29):
"I don't hear anybody else but Gabby. If it's not her voice, I can't hear it. Everything else is a blur. Gabby’s voice automatically sends me into a place of determination and it sends me into a place of I know what time it is," Richardson said.
She added:
"I know she did her part. Now she is trusting me. Now she is believing in me. Now she is expecting me. She has every right to, because she did her thing to get me to go into a different phase, to continue to transfer that energy and that speed in which we did. So she gives me the stick."
Sha'Carri Richardson and Gabby Thomas teamed up at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where Team USA won gold. Twanisha Terry and Tamari Davis were in the team too.
