Lindsey Vonn opens up about resilience following successful right leg surgery
Lindsey Vonn retired from competitive skiing in 2019 after securing a bronze medal in the downhill event at the World Championships in Åre, Sweden, citing persistent injuries. Following a successful partial knee replacement surgery in April 2024, she announced her return to the sport, rejoining the US Ski Team for the 2024-2025 alpine season.
Reflecting on her recovery, the world record holder shared an emotional Instagram post detailing her progress - jumping on her right led for the first time in years. She described this milestone as a profound moment of joy and triumph, symbolizing her physical and mental resilience throughout the journey.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!! It may seem insignificant, but I haven't been able to jump on my right leg like that for many, many years. Today, I am SO much stronger than I was before! I literally had to take a moment and regroup.. I got very emotional, and I was so so happy. This is an incredible journey after surgery that I did not expect... Just another reminder to NEVER GIVE UP on yourself."
On December 7, 2024, Vonn returned to professional alpine skiing at the FIS Fall Festival. Competing against 45 participants, she secured 24th and 27th place finishes.
