London Marathon 2024: Elite runners to watch out for ft. Tigst Assefa, Kenenisa Bekele
The London Marathon 2024 will be held on Sunday, April 21. It will be the 43rd edition of the event and will take place in London, Britain, featuring several elite runners from around the world competing for the top position.
Here's the list of elite runners to watch out for in the London Marathon 2024:
#1 Tigst Assefa
Tigst Assefa, Ethiopian long-distance runner and marathon female world record holder champion, will be among the top runners competing in the London Marathon 2024.
Assefa set the world record in the 2023 Berlin competition after clocking 2:11:53 and is now set to win her second successive Marathon Major and break the race record.
#2 Kenenisa Bekele
Three-time Olympic medalist and third-fastest marathoner Kenenisa Bekele will run in this year's race. Bekele has successfully completed the marathon thrice since 2016 and emerged as runner-up in the 2017 edition.
The Ethiopian athlete clinched the fifth position in 2022 and is bidding to do better in 2024.
#3 Peres Jepchirchir
Peres Jepchirchir, an Olympic Marathon winner and 2017 women’s half-marathon record holder, is set to contest in this year's London Marathon event.
The 2x Marathon Major champion finished in third place after Sifan Hassan in the 2023 London Marathon.
#4 Ruth Chepngetich
Ruth Chepngetich, who is the fourth-fastest female, will also join the elite athletes competing in the 2024 London Marathon. The 2019 World champion is bidding for the first win after her successive victories in the 2022 Chicago Marathon.
#5 Almaz Ayana
Almaz Ayana, a top Ethiopian athlete and two-time Olympic medalist, is bidding to secure a win at the London Marathon 2024. The 32-year-old female long-distance runner emerged seventh in the 2023 London Marathon.
#6 Yalemzerf Yehualaw
Ethiopian athlete and current world 10km race record holder Yalemzerf Yehualaw will aim to emerge victorious in this year's marathon again after winning the 2022 London Marathon event.
#7 Brigid Kosgei
Brigid Kosgei, previous World record holder and Olympic silver medalist, will join other athletes to compete in the London Marathon 2024. The 30-year-old athlete clocked 2:14:04 in the 2019 Chicago Marathon and held the World record title till September 2023.
#8 Tamirat Tola
Tamirat Tola, previous New York Marathon champion, will also join other participants to contend for first place in the 2024 London Marathon scheduled for Sunday, April 21.
#9 Mosinet Geremew
Mosinet Geremew clinched another Silver Medal to his tally in the 2022 World Athletics Championships, where he clocked 2:06:44 after Tamirat Tola. The two-time World Marathon silver medalist is now set to compete in the London Marathon 2024.
